Here are answers to some of the questions we frequently get asked . . .
Q: Do I need to come with a partner? No, you do not need a partner. We rotate partners in all classes, so you get a chance to dance with lots of different people. And unlike some salsa classes, ladies are never made to dance men’s steps!
Q: Can I come on my own? We are a friendly group and everyone is always welcome. Most people come to our classes on their own – it is a great way to make new friends!
Q: I haven’t danced before, what time should I turn up? The first classes start at 7:15pm, with registration from 7:05pm, so if you are a beginner or improver, come along then. This will give you a chance to get signed in and get a drink before the classes start.
Q: I have got two left feet! No you haven’t . . . stop telling porkies!
Q: I have danced before, should I still turn up at 7.05pm? Yes. If you have danced before, but not On2, then you will need to come along to one of the earlier classes at 7.05pm – this will enable you to understand the difference in the steps, timing and feel of New York Mambo On2 Salsa, to the LA style, and you’ll quickly progress to the next level with our talented team of three teachers. If you have not been dancing NY Mambo On2 for at least 5 to 6 months, you will not be permitted to jump straight into the more advanced class after 8.45pm. If you have danced On2 at Intermediate level, then join us at 8pm for some Rueda followed by some social dancing before the Intermiate/advanced On2 class at 9:15pm.
Q: What happens in the class? The evening includes a class, a second class free and social dancing time as well so that you can practice what you have learnt.
Q: What clothes should I wear? Wear anything you want, however bear in mind that salsa is exercise so you’ll get hot. No dance costume necessary!
Q: What shoes should I wear? The best shoes are those without a grippy sole, and also please avoid mules, outdoor trainers or flip flops. SalsaEngland sells all sorts of specialist dance shoes – from dance trainers to sparkly heels! If we haven’t got what you are after, we know where you can get them. For more details, just ask on the night.
Q: Do I need to pre book? There is no need to pre book, just turn up on the night. However if you want more information then feel free to call or email first with your questions. Click on the ‘contacts’ tab for our details. Alternatively, you can buy your first six class course online, go to the 'Sign Up Now' tab.
Q: I love the music, where can I get hold of some to listen to at home? SalsaEngland import CDs, which we have available for sale at each of our venues. Please ask for advice on which one will suit your tastes.
Q: I want to practice more, what can I do? We run classes three times a week, so why not try a second or even a third class during the week? Routines taught in each venue will be different each week so you can fast track your dancing. Why not get a loyalty card, meaning you will not pay any extra for those extra classes. Also, if you wish to practice at home, we have a wide selection of DVDs available – perfect for working on your styling. Then there are the monthly parties – click on the ‘events’ tab for more details – and we also offer private lessons for individual or small group tuition.
Q: What happens at parties? Our Havana Club parties are held on the second Friday of every month (click on the ‘events’ tab for more details), and are a great way to practice your dancing in a fun and friendly setting. The parties attract all levels of dancers, from beginners to advanced so come along and give it a try! There is either a live band or a fun class at 8:30pm, followed by social dancing all night. On party nights without a band, your ticket includes as much bottle water as you can drink, plus up to five free drinks from the range from the bar . . . as well as hot and cold food all evening. All this for just £10!
Q: How many types of salsa are there? Lots! At SalsaEngland we focus most weeks on New York On2 Salsa and Cuban Rueda. Once a month we also teach LA On1 Salsa, and on a different week we teach a special class which could be one of Bachata, ChaChaCha or Merengue. All together, this gives you a great repertoire for dancing to almost any kind of salsa music.
